OCR: AM/FM Sound Source Unlimited: Korg M1 Film Texture Collection Reviewed by Kon Wilms AM/FM To start off; this card isn't exactly one of the newest cards available for the Korg M1, and at a retail price of $89 it isn't exactly one of the cheapest you can buy. But you pay for what you get and in this card's case Sound Source have outdone themselves. The Sounds So what's on the card? Well there are some really outstanding textures, like PULSANOO (solid piano sound with a rough analogue sound in the background), BACKGROUND (a combination of laser-type effects, airy strings and aftertouch effects to create the impression of a ghostly sci-fi landscape), GHOSTPAIN (the M1 bamboo sound with a wailing sound in the background; and also some aftertouch effects), DISCOVERY (airy string with flanging effects in the background), PEACEFULL (vibe sound with great hall ambience), DANCEBASS (a VERY solid bass sound...blow your amp!), SYNTHING1 (good lead synth sound), SYNTHASY (raspy analogue lead synth), SPACECHOIR (excellent vocal strings with great pitchbended attack), MAGICSPELL (very intricate texture which you might expect to hear in the background of a Conan movie!) & WATERCAVE (a flute with loads of hall ambience and the sound of cascading water in the background). The above sounds are all in the PROG section. Naturally the COMBI section is a LOT better (and it should be!). One of the best COMBI sounds has to be GHOSTHAUNT; its got delay effects, the works. Verdict So what else is there to say? If you like atmospheric sounds then this card is definitely what you have been waiting for. Most of the sounds on the card could be classified as strings, but there is a fair selection of lead sounds and MANY effect-type sounds (mostly used as background textures though!). Basses are few but they are of pretty good quality, bar one or two which sounded a little too 'normal'. Lastly, you won't find any lead guitars here: only the odd acoustic guitar with background effects. The four drumkits are interesting and varied, with some neat percussive effects that suit the rest of the sounds on this card perfectly. In conclusion there's only one thing to say... buy it! (Or steal it from your nearest friend who has it) :-) This is the ultimate card for background textures! AM/FM
